Phillips Nizer LLP Accepts Cross-Border Mandate to Lead Investigation into Vietnamese “Pig Butchering” Scam; Assists Vietnamese Authorities in Arresting 5 Suspects; More Than VND 7 Billion Involved, Over USD 120,000 Recovered, and Lawsuits Filed on Behalf of Victims

In June 2025, a major breakthrough was achieved in a cross-border “pig butchering” fraud investigation led by the cross-border asset recovery team of Phillips Nizer LLP. After accepting mandates from multiple victims in Vietnam, the firm conducted extensive tracing of financial transactions and server data associated with the fraudulent cryptocurrency trading platform known as “Bitsten.” Through a comprehensive reverse-tracing investigation, the firm identified a transnational criminal network allegedly operated by Chinese organizers and based for an extended period in the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone in Laos. Comprehensive evidence was submitted to the Public Security Department of Bac Ninh Province, Vietnam, ultimately assisting authorities in the successful arrest of five suspects. To date, the firm has helped multiple Vietnamese clients recover more than USD 120,000 in stolen funds and has formally initiated criminal and civil proceedings before Vietnamese courts.

The investigation began in early 2025 when several Vietnamese victims reported being targeted through social media platforms and persuaded to invest through the fraudulent cryptocurrency platform “Bitsten.” After transferring funds into designated accounts, victims discovered that withdrawals were impossible. The firm’s cross-border investigative team promptly launched an inquiry, conducting in-depth analysis of social media accounts, fund aggregation accounts, and server IP addresses associated with the scheme. The investigation indicated that the organization had operated for an extended period within the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone in Laos under the direction of Chinese organizers, while Vietnamese nationals were recruited to target victims within Vietnam. The group allegedly used illegally obtained phone numbers to create numerous fake Facebook and Zalo accounts, posing as successful female entrepreneurs. After establishing trust through prolonged online conversations, the suspects allegedly persuaded victims to participate in fictitious digital asset investments promising high returns before severing all contact after receiving the funds.

Upon completion of its investigation, Phillips Nizer LLP formally submitted its evidence package and financial tracing reports to the Public Security Department of Bac Ninh Province. Acting on the intelligence provided, investigators determined that several suspects had returned to Vietnam and were concealing their identities by working ordinary jobs in different regions. Authorities subsequently launched a coordinated enforcement operation and arrested five suspects identified as Phuong Van Nghia, Wei Duc Chuang, Nguyen Tien Rui, Bui Quang Huy, and Lo Van Quang. Investigators determined that the group was linked to at least five separate fraud cases involving more than VND 7 billion in losses, with the largest individual case exceeding VND 2 billion.

Following the arrests, the firm immediately initiated cross-border asset recovery efforts through its legal cooperation network spanning Vietnam, Laos, and China. By conducting extensive tracing of transaction flows, the firm successfully identified and froze accounts associated with the case across multiple jurisdictions. More than USD 120,000 has already been recovered and is being returned to victims in accordance with applicable legal procedures. In addition, Phillips Nizer LLP has formally filed criminal and civil claims before Vietnamese courts seeking compensation from the five suspects as well as the alleged Chinese organizers behind the operation.

At present, all five suspects have been subjected to criminal enforcement measures by the Public Security Department of Bac Ninh Province, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities continue to pursue additional members of the criminal organization and other individuals connected to the scheme.
